“The Silent Crisis of Resilience in Schools”
In recent years, an increasing number of primary school students have been heard uttering the troubling phrase, “I can’t anymore.” Behind these words lies an emotional burden many children struggle to express. Mental exhaustion, frustration, and a lack of coping mechanisms all contribute to this silent crisis of resilience.

When Courtney Orange a schools motivational wellbeing speaker visited Meadow Primary School in the Borough of Epsom & Ewell and Kingston upon Thames, he spoke to 630 pupils and he brought with him tools that empowered pupils to reframe setbacks.
How to Bounce Back as a School Pupil
Using age-appropriate language and energetic delivery, he introduced the concept of “bounce-back moments” — instances where pupils could reflect on failures and turn them into learning experiences.
Through interactive storytelling and simple resilience-building activities, the children learned how to pause, breathe, and rethink their reactions. They practiced the 4-7-8 breathing technique and used problem-solving role-play games to tackle everyday challenges. These tools were practical and easy to integrate into classroom routines.
Within days, teachers reported a marked difference. Instead of crying over mistakes or freezing up during tests, students paused, tried again, and used their “bounce-back” words.
This mental shift reduced classroom tension and promoted emotional stability.
Here are some of the powerful values at Meadow Primary School some of which contribute and go hand in hand with helping to build resilience.

The Power of Investing in student RESILIENCE talks
The session highlighted an urgent truth: resilience can be taught, and it’s essential. By investing in wellbeing talks and resilience education early, schools can equip children with lifelong skills to handle stress, failure, and uncertainty. Empowering pupils now prevents emotional crises later.
Resilience Building
Actionable Tips:
- 💪 “Bounce-Back Moments”: Teach kids to reflect on a recent struggle and write 2 things they learned from it.
- 🧩 Problem-Solving Games: Use scenarios and role-playing to help students practice finding solutions to challenges.
- ⏳ Resilience Breathing Tool: Introduce the “4-7-8” breathing method when emotions run high to restore calm and focus.
